CLAYTON — The Butler boys cross country team as well as individual qualifier Emma Bryant have advanced to Saturday’s regional cross country meet by virtue of their top-eight finishes at Saturday’s district meet.
Bryant placed third overall in a time of 19:35 but the Lady Aviators just missed qualifying as a team by placing ninth.
Butler’s boys placed sixth out of 25 teams to qualify.
Leading the Aviators were Long-fa Lin (21st, 17:18), Kyle Wertz (23rd, 17:19), Caleb Colon (28th, 17:26), Sean Luttrell (73rd, 18:39), Gabe Warren (83rd, 18:50), Mitchell Heeter (100th, 19:09) and Nick Luttrell (138th, 20:20).
“I’m happy for senior Caleb Colon who gets to continue his season for one more week,” said Butler coach Andy White. “Caleb has been a great leader for us this year. He has shown the work ethic and dedication needed to be a successful cross country runner. The rest of the team follows his lead.”
White said that making regional is an expectation for the Aviators.
“We expect to move on to regionals, that is the goal every year and we typically accomplish that goal,” said White. “I’m really proud of the boys. We have a young team so the experience they garner from regionals will help with their development.”
The times for the Lady Aviators were Olivia Schoenherr (43rd, 21:23), Abbie Schoenherr (63rd, 21:59), Sarah Hickle (74th, 22:42), Shelby Moses (81st, 23:08), Michell Valdivia (109th, 24:42) and Nicole Weiss (121st, 25:42).
“Congratulations to Emma Bryant who placed third overall. She is set up well to go after another state berth next week,” said White. “I’m proud of the girls, who made steady progress throughout the year. They just came up short. We only have one senior in our top seven so the returning runners should have a chance next year to qualify for regional. I need to say good bye to Shelby Moses who ran her last Butler Cross country race. I wish her luck.”
The Aviators will compete at the Troy regional meet on Saturday. The Division I girls race will be at 12:30 p.m. and the boys will run at 3 p.m.
