VANDALIA — Butler senior swimmer Tommy Cope has been named an All-American in two events by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

Cope was ranked 19th nationally in the 100 meter breaststroke and 18th nationally in the 200 meter individual medley based on his times at last season’s OHSAA Southwest District Meet and the OHSAA State Meet.

Cope will be recognized at halftime of the Butler football game on Friday, Oct. 16.

“I’ve known Tommy since he was five years old at Fair Valley,” said Greg Bergman, Aviator swimming coach. “Tommy is a dedicated athlete who still finds the fun in the sport. Tommy is a very supportive team member regardless of level and age of teammate.”

Cope has committed to swim for the Michigan Wolverines and will hold a signing ceremony in November.

“I know Tommy will be very successful next year on the men’s team at the University of Michigan, and it’s my hope that he qualifies and participates in the 2016 Olympic Trials,” said Bergman.
