CLAYTON — The Butler cross country teams competed at the Alliance Running Invitational at Miami Valley Career Technology Center on Saturday. Both teams finished 11th.
Leading the way for the Lady Aviators was the meet’s overall winner Emma Bryant in a time of 19:27. She was followed by 32nd Olivia Schoenherr (32nd place, 21:14), Abby Schoenherr (78th, 22:54), Sarah Hickle (91st, 24:28), Michell Valdivia (94th, 24:58), Nicole Weiss (99th, 25:59), and Sydney Baker (102nd, 26:38).
“Emma is starting to come into form,” said Butler head coach Andy White. “She ran real comfortable for the victory. It is good that she is able to race herself into shape without having to over exert herself. Her time wasn’t as fast as we would have hoped but Emma is a racer and she only runs as fast as she needs to get the job done. A shout out goes to Michell Valdivia who continues to run a PR (personal record) every race she runs.”
The boys team also finished 11th out of 18 teams. Kyle Wertz placed 23rd overall in a time of 17:15 to lead Butler followed by Long-Fa Lin (30th, 17:23), Caleb Colon (45th, 17:48), Sean Luttrell (89th, 18:57), Gabe Warren (90th, 19:01), Mitchell Heeter (103rd, 20:02), and Nick Luttrell (104th, 20:06).
“Kyle and Long-Fa both ran PRs,” said White. “Kyle (Wertz) is knocking on the door to break into the 16’s which would be a great accomplishment. The team ran a little more aggressive early in the race which is why we ran better at the front of our group.”
Butler will return to action on Saturday, October 3 at the Buck Creek Invitational at Buck Creek State Park in Springfield.
“The team will be off next weekend so they will be able to get some great training in before our next race,” said White. “We are in the most important time of year for training.”
