Butler bowlers encouraged to bowl in youth leagues

Staff report

VANDALIA — Many Butler High School Bowlers will be competing in two leagues this fall.

The Saturday morning league at Poelking Marian Lanes in Huber Heights and the Youth Scholarship Travel League, run by Coach Rob Dever of Troy offer opportunities for bowlers to hone their skills in preparation for the upcoming high school bowling season.

The Saturday morning youth league at Marian Lanes offers two choices, a singles league and a three person team league. The Youth Scholarship Travel League, Sunday’s at 5:30 p.m., is a singles league that visits several different bowling centers including Poelking Marian Lanes, Troy Bowl in Troy, Bel-Mar Lanes in Sidney, Bowl-10 Lanes in Fairborn, Century Lanes in New Carlisle and Treaty Lanes in Greenville.

“No matter what your average, there’s a league for you,” says Butler Bowling head coach Steve Sacks. “Marian Lanes has a strong youth program that though the years has developed Butler and Wayne High School’s top bowlers. There’s weekly coaching at Marian as well, where Butler and Wayne High School Coaches actively participate in the instruction. I encourage parents of kids 4-18 years old to come out and try a short season youth league.”

The Scholarship Travel League has two average based divisions, and is for the 125 average and up bowler. Both leagues offer the ability for kids to earn money for college, no matter what their skill level through the United States Bowling Congress’s SMART scholarship program.

“It’s a little known secret that kids that develop their games to a high level by high school can earn a significant amount of scholarship money through bowling. For example, my oldest son earned over $18,000 in college scholarship money in six years through youth bowling.”

Both leagues start the weekend of September 12-13. For more information on all Saturday morning leagues at Poelking Marian Lanes, come to open signups the next two Saturday’s(Aug. 29, Sep. 5) from 10 a.m – 1 p.m. or call 937-233-2222. If you don’t have a team, they will place you on a team.
