BUTLER TWP. — September is a time for beautiful seasonal changes and lots of fun and excitement at Aullwood. Come to Aullwood Farm and enjoy a draft horse drawn wagon ride. Join the Morning Discovery Walk For Adults every Thursday and learn more about the natural world. Celebrate the bounty of the autumn season at Aullwood’s Apple Fest.

Morning Discovery Walks for Adults

Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. Meet us in the lobby of the Nature Center for the start of morning discovery walks then journey on a walk revealing many new and exciting discoveries. Bring binoculars! Members of Aullwood and National Audubon Society are admitted free, non-members are $5.00/adult. (Center)

Get Your Buzz on about Pollinators Farm Walk

Discover the buzz about the garden on Saturday, September 9 starting at 2:30 p.m.! Look for pollinators and learn all about honeybees. Water the garden by using a rain barrel and help dig up earthworms. Visit the herb garden with its variety of colors and marvelous scents. Create a sunflower craft and plant your own to take home. Fascinating Fall Foliage Walk

On Sunday, September 10 starting at 2:30 p.m., learn the secrets of trees as leaves turn from green to a colorful palette of bronze, crimson, orange, scarlet, gold and purple. Discover why trees shed their leaves and other strategies trees use to prepare for winter in a guided outdoor exploration with Nenita Lapitan, Volunteer Coordinator. (Center)

Wild Edibles Walk

Saturday, September 16 starting at 2:30 p.m.

What are some plants that are tasty to nibble on and which ones could make you violently ill? Take a walk with an Aullwood Naturalist through the woods, prairie and meadow and learn about some wild plants that are edible. (Center)

Aullwood Apple Fest

Enjoy an apple feast and so much more at Aullwood Apple Fest! Spend the day at Aullwood Farm, 9101 Frederick Pike, on September 23 and 24 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and enjoy all the sights, sounds and delicious aromas of Apple Fest. Sample apple pie baked in a Dutch oven, freshly pressed cider, apple dumplings, apple butter, lemon shakes, kettle corn, fish boats, cabbage rolls, pizza, corn-on-the-cob, beef chili, grilled cheese sandwiches, sugar waffles and Ullery’s home-made ice cream! Downing Fruit Farms will offer fresh apples and apple slushies. Aullwood’s food booth features a variety of sandwiches made with our own farm meats from bratwurst to cheeseburgers! This year we are bringing back Aullwood’s Apple Butter made with our very own secret recipe so come and get yours at Apple Fest!

Free children’s activities, games, crafts, and balloon animals will keep the little ones entertained and the PNC Mobile Learning Adventure will have lots of interactive learning and giveaways. Everyone enjoys a visit with farm animal friends and a tractor or draft horse pulled wagon ride. Hear tales from Johnny Appleseed and get a free apple — always a highlight! Listen to music and laugh and learn with Chris Rowlands’ songs and puppets. Urban Station will entertain all on Saturday with southern rock and oldies music. The Miami Valley Dance Council Square Dancers will delight at 2:00 pm. on Saturday. The Sugar Grove Bluegrass Band will bring their top-tappin’ music all day Sunday. Several artisans and craft exhibitors will offer needle crafts, animal masks, sand art, garden ornaments, painted pumpkins, wood crafts, soaps and lotions, woven items, jewelry and more. Truly, Aullwood Apple Fest has something for everyone.

Aullwood Apple Fest is sponsored by PNC, Dayton Freight, Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, Cargill, Enterprise Roofing & Sheet Metal, Western Ohio Graphics, Abbey Credit Union and Riverdale Optimist Club. Admission: $5/adult, $3/child; (ages 3 & under free); Friends of Aullwood members are free with membership card.

Please note that Aullwood’s Marie S. Aull Education Center at 1000 Aullwood Road will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, September 23-24, during Apple Fest.
