VANDALIA — Current and former Vandalia Police Officers gathered on Friday to send off Officer Larry Smith who is retiring after nearly 34 years in law enforcement.

Smith, who graduated from Butler High School, has served as a reserve officer, patrol officer, and detective during his career in Vandalia. He was selected as the Officer of the Year twice, in 1997 and 2013.

During his remarks, Vandalia Police Chief Douglas Knight praised Smith’s long career.

“During your career, you have made Vandalia safer and you have made this police department better,” said Knight.

Smith also served as a full-time member of an Ohio Organized Crime Investigation Commission from 2001-2002. The task force led to federal indictments of 19 individuals for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and other acts of violence and intimidation. 15 of those defendants received mandatory prison sentences.
