The Vandalia Recreation Center offers many options to help seniors maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

VANDALIA — Many local senior citizens are making the Vandalia Recreation Center a routine part of their week, as many “senior friendly” programs are currently offered.

“We take our commitment to offer the entire community programming to improve health and physical fitness, and that certainly includes our senior population,” said Elaine Kaylor Wittman, Facility Manager. “We have programs to offset the cost of admission, and activities to match any fitness level.”

Many seniors using the Recreation Center have zero out-of-pocket expenses related to admission, as some insurance companies cover those costs as a member benefit.

“With some companies, the Recreation Center is reimbursed on each member’s monthly usage,” Wittman explained. “These companies understand that regular usage of the facility improves a member’s health, which often means lower medical-related expenses.”

The Vandalia Recreation Center is currently accepting the following insurance programs:

  • SilverSneakers
  • ForeverFit
  • Prime
  • Silver&Fit
  • Active&Fit
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Fitness Discount Program
  • Coming Soon: Optum Fitness Advantage

“To verify your insurance’s fitness benefits, contact your insurance company by calling the number on the back of your insurance card,” said Wittman.

Sarah Lavy, Fitness Supervisor says, “Once in the center, you’ll find numerous senior friendly activities to fit your health and wellness needs. Seniors enjoy utilizing our family friendly fitness floor, which encompasses cardio options and an assortment of weight lifting alternatives. Additionally, we offer over 25 different land and water fitness classes taught by certified instructors. Examples of classes include Yoga, Zumba, and Water Arthritis to name a few.”

Lavy continues, “We also offer Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the country, multiple times per week.” Senior Volleyball is also offered once a week. After a workout or walk on the track, enjoy reading one of our three newspapers in the lobby, a new amenity starting the end of July.

There are special incentives at the Recreation Center designed to encourage seniors to visit often.

“One of our popular incentive programs is the VRC T-shirt program sponsored by Edward Jones of Vandalia,” Lavy explained. “We offer free t-shirts to seniors on milestone visits such as the 24th, 100th, 300th up to 1,000th visit.”

The center also offers monthly gift card drawings for senior members. To be eligible for the drawing, a senior has to make 10 visits to the Recreation Center in a month.

“The Vandalia Recreation center has fitness equipment that is safe and easily accessible for all fitness levels,” Lavy said. “Anyone with questions can ask one of our friendly Fitness Attendants, available during all hours of operation.”
