VANDALIA — A large gas leak forced evacuations on Randler Avenue early Monday afternoon.

The leak, which could be heard blocks away as a loud gush or hiss, occurred near the back of the Beau Townsend Nissan property in a Vectren substation. Vandalia Division of Fire Chief Chad Follick said it was a “significant leak.”

“That’s a big, high pressure line going through there, about 220 pounds per square inch,” he said.

Follick said that crews knocked on five doors and evacuated one home on Randler. Crews then moved on to Bosco Avenue but a Vectren crew got the leak shut off before any evacuations occurred on that street.

The leak, which Follick attributed to overpressurization, was shut off a few minutes after 1 p.m. and fire crews terminated operational command at 1:26 p.m.

Follick said there were no injuries or illnesses as a result of the leak.
