VANDALIA — The Vandalia City Council will consider a recommendation to rename the Vandalia Recreation Center after former City Manager Bruce Sucher on Monday evening.

A vote is not expected until June, but the issue will be discussed during Monday’s council study session which begins at 6 p.m.

Sucher, who served the city as a police officer, chief of police, and city manager, died in March. He was the President of the Vandalia-Butler Board of Education at the time of his death.

Council received a letter from Larry Taylor recommending that the Recreation be named after Sucher. The council appointed an Ad Hoc committee which unanimously recommended the renaming.

Sucher was the city manager when the Recreation Center and Justice Center were constructed. In an interview shortly after his death, Taylor said Sucher was instrumental in seeing the projects to completion.

“I don’t believe we would have a Recreation Center if it wasn’t for Bruce,” said Taylor.

The council study session begins at 6 p.m. in the large conference room at the Vandalia Municipal Building. Council’s regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
