VANDALIA — The Vandalia Division of Police has promoted Garry Lawson to Sergeant. Lawson fills a vacancy created by the retirement of Sergeant Gary Jackson.
City Manager Jon Crusey administered the oath of office Wednesday morning with Lawson’s family, city staff, and police officers on hand.
Lawson has served in the Vandalia Police Department since 2010. He has been a patrol officer and a detective.
Prior to Vandalia, Lawson was a police officer in Columbus and Riverside. He also served as a correctional officer in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Vandalia Police Chief Doug Knight said that Lawson has a way with people.
“Gary has a great sense of how to interact with people,” said Knight. “His interpersonal skills, his commitment to the profession, and his calm, friendly, and deliberate way of addressing issues has made him an outstanding officer. We look forward to the leadership he’s going to bring to our management team.”
Lawson said he feels blessed to serve in Vandalia.
“I appreciate working in this community,” said Lawson. “It is really a blessing. I’ve worked for a couple of other agencies before, and this is the first time in my career where it feels like we are pulling on the oars together with the community as opposed to sometimes against it. It is a real privilege to work here in Vandalia.”
