VANDALIA — For over 20 years, Larry Taylor and Beau Townsend Ford have donated a car to be given away at the Butler High School After Prom. For Taylor, the decision was easy.

“Barb Heid called me and told me about the After Prom and said she needed a catch to keep the kids there until 4 a.m.,” said Taylor. “I was happy to get involved.”

Butler’s prom was held Saturday with the After Prom immediately afterwards at the First Baptist Church Hangar.

“What’s more important than our kids?” he asked. “I want to do what I can to keep the kids safe but make it fun. That’s part of being a community. More and more, communities are based around schools, and the After Prom is a fun school function. I think its one of the things that makes our community special and separates it from other places. It’s one of the things our community, its parents, and the businesses do best in this town.”

The After Prom is just one of the ways Taylor helps students at Butler. Beau Townsend also sponsors an annual test drive fundraiser that benefits Butler athletics.

“You can’t just take from a community,” said Taylor. “I get supported – drive up and down the road and every third car says Beau Townsend on it. They have supported me, and I have to give back to the community. I love our town and I’m all about supporting the City of Vandalia.”

Taylor said that being involved isn’t just the right thing to do – it also makes good business sense.

“Community involvement is very important to me,” said Taylor. “First it makes good business sense – the community supports me, so I can give back. But as a community, we are supposed to take care of our kids and do what we can to keep them safe. I try to play a role in that.”
