If you plan to drink, don’t rely on the luck ‘o the Irish

DAYTON — ArriveSafe, a creation of Montgomery County Prosecutor, Mat Heck, Jr., offers free cab rides home to St. Patrick’s Day revelers. Prosecutor Heck wants to remind holiday partygoers “There is simply no excuse to drink and drive this St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Call ArriveSafe – remember, the life you save may be your own!”

AAA Public Affairs Manager, Cindy Antrican, encourages those who plan to celebrate the holiday with alcohol to “plan before they party.”

“AAA urges those who intend to celebrate the holiday at an area pub to also make a plan for how they will get home. Program the ArriveSafe phone number into your cell phone so it will be handy when you need it,” Antrican said.

Three options available to celebrate the holiday responsibly:

Take advantage of a free cab ride home by calling ArriveSafe (937) 449-9999 anytime beginning Thursday, March 16 at 6 p.m. running through Sunday, March 19 at 6 a.m. Rides offered to Montgomery County residents covering fares up to $50.

Ask a family member or friend to be your designated driver. Dublin Pub and Flanagan’s Pub will provide free AAA Designated Driver wrist bands and offer complimentary non-alcoholic beverages to designated drivers.

Free shuttle service will be available. Free parking is available at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Additional free and paid parking is available near Dublin Pub and in the Oregon District.

Don’t be a statistic:

In 2015 alcohol impaired drivers were involved in nearly half of all fatal crashes in Montgomery County. Alcohol impaired drivers were involved in nearly a third of the fatal crashes In Ohio in 2015.

Because the holiday falls on a Friday this year, law enforcement and traffic safety experts have expressed a higher level of concern about impaired drivers.

The 2015 AAA Traffic Safety Culture Index results showed that drivers view drinking and driving as a very serious threat, and virtually all disapprove of drinking and driving and most acknowledge that others also disapprove of it. More than 1 in 8, however, admit to driving at least once in the past year when they thought their alcohol level might have been close to or possibly over the legal limit.

Additional support for ArriveSafe is provided by Heidelberg Distributing.
