VANDALIA — Butler Senior Michael Flannery is the winner of a $1,000 scholarship From Thrivent Financial. He and his Father, Mike, were automatically entered to win when they attended a “College Financing Options” informational session at Butler High School on December 12th.
Michael will use the scholarship at Sinclair this fall. He plans to transfer and graduate from Wright State University, possibly in Accounting or Actuarial Sciences.
Michael is an Eagle Scout who replaced some of the outdoor signs at Aullwood for his Eagle Project. He also assisted with the east side of the Rotary Bridge between the Art Park and the Historical Society.
The session was presented by Butler TWP resident Denise Eder from cuLearn, a division of Thrivent Financial. Local Thrivent representative Kevin Larger hosted Denise, at the request of Superintendent Brad Neavin, Principal Tom Luebbe and Guidance Counselor Mark Peck.
The school administration provides students with a myriad of information on scholarship applications and completing the FAFSA. The informational session on “College Financing Options” filled a niche by providing attendees with general information on the various financing options that most people miss out on, as well as resources for more specific details and guidance.
Parents of freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to attend next December, as it provides very timely information. For example, parents learn how to establish a framework for discussion with the student about just how expensive one school would be versus another, using a site that calculates money likely available from each school based on factors like ACT score and family income.
