VANDALIA — The Vandalia Butler Board of Education approved the 2017-18 school calendar during its meeting on Tuesday, February 28. The meeting was held in conjunction with Youth in Government Day in which Board members and district staff pair up with counterparts for an exercise in learning how local government works.
Students in grades 1-12 will report to school on August 16 and the last day for students will be May 24, 2018. Winter break will be from December 22 – January 9. Spring break will be March 26-30.
In other action, the Board approved a donated book for Helke Elementary School’s Media Center titled The Bear that Wasn’t by Frank Tashlin.
The Board also approved books for Demmitt Elementary, Helke, and Smith Middle School that were purchased with Scholastic Dollars.
The Board accepted donations in the amount of $300 from an anonymous donor for the Demmitt third grade trip to the Victoria Theatre for “I Have a Dream” and also a $500 donation from the Optimist Club of Vandalia-Butler to Demmitt for the Muse Machine.

The Board of Education will hold its next regular meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. in the Butler High School Lecture Hall.
