VANDALIA — The Friendly’s Restaurant that once sat at the corner of National and Helke Roads is no more.

Demolition crews began paving the way for a new True North Shell station at the site of the abandoned restaurant on Tuesday morning.

True North purchased the lot and combined it with its existing parcel at the intersection and will consruct a 4,200 square foot store.

The construction of the site required two variances by City Council. The first was a section of City Code that requires a gas station to be more at least 200 feet from residential housing.

The existing store is currently within 150 feet of residential property, but the closest gasoline dispenser is 209 feet from residences. The new store would reduce that to 203 feet.

The second variance would allow a third curb cut on the corner lot to allow for better traffic flow. One will be on Helke Road, the other two on National Road.
