CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. — Camp Atterbury, Indiana, is an Army National Guard base just south of Indianapolis. During the week of 5 to 11 June, slightly different uniforms appeared in the camp as the 5th Young Marine Division conducted a formal Junior Leadership School (JLS) and a Senior Leadership School (SLS). These schools provided in-residence training for 45 Young Marines aspiring for promotion and advancement, some coming from as far away as Colorado. The course was conducted by Young Marine staff and senior Young Marines and provided highly disciplined training in accordance with Young Marine National training guidelines.
Among the students at the school were three from the Miami Valley Young Marines (MVYM), headquartered in Huber Heights. They were YM/Sergeant Brandon Wyatt, YM/Corporal Karl Slader, and YM/Lance Corporal Aniya Reeves. All three represented the MVYM company at the highest level, each winning special awards. YM/Sergeant Wyatt was selected as first runner up for Honor Graduate. YM/Corporal Slader achieved the highest test score. Last but not least, YM/ Lance Corporal Reeves led the entire school with the highest female physical fitness score.
MVYM Unit Commander (UC), J. Keagan Miller, is very proud of these Young Marines and their ability to perform so well. He believes that these accomplishments result from the MVYM training discipline. UC Miller said, “These Young Marines are consistently hard-chargers and it is no surprise to me that they did so well.”
An MVYM open house for interested persons is conducted every Wednesday evening at 5:45 p.m. at St. Peter Church basement, 6161 Chambersburg Road, in Huber Heights. All Miami Valley parents and children from age eight to high school seniors are invited.
