VANDALIA — Mention Reader’s Theatre and most people envision a group sitting in a semi-circle reading a play together for their own enjoyment. Not so for Vandalia Senior Center.

They have taken Reader’s Theatre to new heights. Fourteen Center members are performing three short one-act plays. They carry their scripts and refer to them often and act out the plays using only simple scenery, props, costumes and sound effects. It’s called a “stage reading.”

They performed the three comedies, a humorous trilogy about “Crime and Punishment,” on Friday, May 6 following the Center’s Potluck dinner for members. Signup for the dinner was at capacity so an audience of 80 was expected to eat well and laugh a lot.

The plays were directed by Richard and Jan Sanders who recently moved to the area from Connecticut.
