VANDALIA — The Vandalia Fire Division celebrated a “landmark day” on Wednesday as its new Fire Captain, Jordan Samson, was sworn in.

Samson comes to Vandalia after serving the past 13 years with the Englewood Fire Department.

“Jordan is a young guy, high energy, and I’m excited by what be brings to the command staff and the organization as a whole,” said Fire Chief Chad Follick. “He is eager to learn, has made a great transition from firefighter to lieutenant, and we think he can hit the ground running.”

Follick said that the addition of another captain will give the department better command staff coverage. His first 24-hour shift will come next week.

“Traditionally our command staff has been relatively small and subsidized by part-time staff,” said Follick. “We have been running short supervision-wise for a while.”

Follick said he has typically filled in the gaps, but that the department has gotten to the point where it needs three leaders.

“We needed someone to provide more continuity and consistency between shift, and Jordan will provide that,” he said. “It’s exciting for us.”
