Vandalia Senior Center April Calendar

VANDALIA – The following is an April calendar of events at the Vandalia Senior Center:

April 1 Potluck

The members at the March 4 potluck really enjoyed the $1.25 euchre games. This game will be played again after the April 1 potluck meal. If you need to have a euchre lesson at 5:00 p.m. that night, let Toni know in the office.

First Movie Day

Friday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. with snacks By Chris Leydig from Genesis Troy Healthcare

The first movie is called Learning to Drive. We were unable to obtain this movie in February when it was first scheduled. As her marriage dissolves, a Manhattan writer (Patricia Clarkson) takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor (Ben Kingsley) with marriage troubles of his own. In each other’s company they find the courage to get back on the road and the strength to take the wheel.

Colored Pencils Drawing Classes

The next session of drawing with colored pencils with instructor, Tom Kinarny, will begin on April 1 and run through May 27. The cost is $55 for eight classes. Pay Tom in class.

Lunch & Learn: Handwriting Analysis

This Lunch & Learn will teach you what your handwriting says about you. Claire Esposito has been doing handwriting analysis for over 32 years and has presented her fun oriented program across the country and on international cruises. This Lunch & Learn is provided by Holly Dethardt of Stonespring.

Catered Dinner: April in Paris

The menu for April in Paris consists of Lemon chicken, Roasted beef / Au jus, Au gratins & mashed potatoes, Fresh vegetables with baby green beans, Fresh mixed fruit, Croissants & dinner rolls, Cake with French cream, and Strawberry cake with white chocolate mousse icing. After the meal, you will be entertained by the Saxophone Quartet. The members of this group are retired from the University of Dayton. Stop by the office to pay $12 to purchase your ticket. The deadline for buying tickets is Friday, April 8.

Learn a New Game: Mah Jongg

The first class will be Friday, April 8, starting at 10:00 a.m. Come find out if you like this new game. Elaine Ford who plays in Mah Jong groups and has taught this game before will be here to start teaching you the basics of American rules Mah Jongg. Sign up to let us know if you will be attending this first class.

Lunch & Learn: Hearing Healthcare

Diana Caudill of Earzlink will be sponsoring this Lunch & Learn. Timothy Cross, M.A, BC-HIS, the regional director of Earzlink Hearing Care, will be here to present, “What’s New in Hearing Healthcare: The Good, The Bad, and The Beneficial.” The deadline to sign up is Friday, April 1. No fooling!!

Ukrainian Type Eggs

On Friday, April 8, from 1-4 p.m. Cass Barth will teach her second class using a simplified method to make a Ukrainian Egg. This class is limited to ten members. Please pay $10 in the office before the class to cover the cost of the kiskas, dye, wax, and other supplies.

Lunch & Learn: Senior Organizing Solutions

Olive Wagar from Organized by Olive will be here on Tuesday, April 12, for the Lunch & Learn provided by Robin Shafer with Springmeade. She will talk about the fact that most seniors have accumulated quite a bit of stuff over the years! Professional Organizer Olive Wagar will share solutions that will help you: simplify your life, preserve your memories, reduce paper piles, and eliminate safety hazards and right size for this special season of your life!

Tax Preparation

Free income tax preparation will be available on Tuesdays through April 12 with appointments from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You need to come into the center to sign up. It is important to bring a copy of your previous tax return. You must bring a picture ID and your social security card. Please arrive fifteen minutes before your appointment. Huber Heights Senior Center at 6428 Chambersburg Rd. has appointments on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and The Earl Heck Community Center at 201 N. Main St., Englewood, has appointments Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3p.m. As with The Harrison Township Government Building at 5945 N. Dixie Dr. has a tax preparation on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Meet with Medigold

Pam Smith from Medigold will be here to answer your insurance questions on Tuesday, April 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Another Invitation from Vandalia-Butler High School

You are invited to come to dinner at the Vandalia-Butler High School and attend the musical, Into the Woods., on Thursday, April 14. The deadline for signing up is Monday, April 11. Park in the main parking lot off Alkaline Springs and go through the front doors to the school cafeteria. A lasagna dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

Art Appreciation: “Pick a Gallery” Dayton Art Institute Trip

A trip to the Dayton Art Institute is planned for Thursday, April 14. Sign up if you are going so reservations can be made at the restaurant, Leo Bistro, which is inside the museum. We will meet at the Senior Center and leave at 11:00 a.m. The group will be leaving the museum at 2:00 p.m. to return. The deadline to sign up will be Monday, April 11, so the reservations can be made with the restaurant.

Second Movie: Friday, April 15

In the movie, Right, controversy surrounds CBS anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and “60 Minutes” producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) after the network broadcasts a report about President George W. Bush and his military service. Snacks by Kelly Lundqvist from Crossroads Rehab.

Lifeline Screening

Screening that will be at Vandalia Senior Citizens Center on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Line Dancing Anyone?

Last year Kevin Glueckert taught line dancing from May to December. The group stopped having class during the holidays and the cold weather. Last year the class was held on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. The cost was $5. If you are interested, sign up on the bulletin board by Thursday, April 7. If there are enough people signed up by then, I will talk to Kevin about the possibility of starting classes in May.

Summer and Fall Registration for Sinclair

Anne Holaday will be coming on Monday, April 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. You can register for both summer and fall classes at this time.

Mark Your Calendar for Tuesday, May 17

The Senior Day Carnival will be from 1-3 p.m on Tuesday, May 17 at the Vandalia Rec Center on Stonequarry Road. There will be activities and games in the gym and other areas of the Rec Center. Carnival snacks will be provided. Eighteen area businesses have already donated gift cards and coupons that will be given away that day. You can start signing up on March 17! The deadline to sign up is Friday, May 13, so we have time to make final preparations.

“Take Me Out to the Ball Game!”

The Dayton Dragons have reserved seats in section 104 behind first base for the Vandalia Senior Center for the 7 p.m. game on Saturday, June 25, against the South Bend Cubs. Pick up a form at the Senior Center to fill out and pay $12 to the office if you are interested in attending this game. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Friday, May 20. You can pick up your tickets in the office after Memorial Day.

CPR Class

Kim Hannahan from the Vandalia Fire Department will be instructing this class from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This class needs a minimum of six students and a maximum of 20 members. Kim was able to get a discounted price of $3 for this class. It is paid in class.

Lunch & Learn Reminder

Please remember to write down what you sign up for. If you need to cancel, please call in as early as possible. I usually tell our sponsors the number of people signed up two to three days in advance of the lunch.

Donation Requests and Changes

The floral group needs more greenery and flowers. They would also like to have Mason jars. We are also taking donations in the office of scrapbook and card making supplies, such as card stock, scrapbook paper, rubber stamps, paper punches, stickers, and more. We are no longer collecting egg cartons and plastic bags. You can take plastic bags to Kroger to be recycled. The stamps must have a ¼ inch border around the stamp. Please place the stamps in the stamp box on the counter in the office. The profits from the stamps pay for Sunday School materials for underprivileged children in Latin America.
