VANDALIA — Butler senior Madison Scherer has volunteered her time and effort from Chicago, to Haiti, and to her fellow students at Butler High School. Now, Scherer is being recognized for her efforts.
Scherer, along with 31 other students from the Dayton area, was honored at the LaSertoma Club of Dayton’s annual Youth Service Awards Banquet Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the Presidential Banquet Center.
The senior began her community service work her freshman year when she went to Chicago on a mission trip. Scherer says that trip made an impact on her life and began her desire to do more, especially with people with multiple disabilities.
Since her sophomore year, Scherer has been a peer tutor at BHS, giving up her study hall time to work with students in the special education program.
“I think [volunteering] has taught me a lot about how to treat people. I have honestly learned so much more from the people I have helped than I could have every taught them,” Scherer said.
Scherer also helped a village in Haiti when she traveled there on a seven-day mission trip. From painting houses to planting trees, she says she and her group were able to make a difference with the people they met.
After graduation, Scherer plans to continue working with others. She’ll be studying early childhood education at Bowling Green State University. She hopes to continue “to travel, do mission work and learn about other cultures.”
