Monica Lamuth, a fifth grade math teacher at Smith Middle School, is the February Staff Member of the Month for the Vandalia Butler City Schools. Lamuth was nominated by Smith Principal Russ Garman.

“Monica is a dedicated and caring teacher,” said Garman. “She always goes above and beyond for her students.”

Question and answer with Lamuth:

Why did you become a teacher?

I became a teacher because I wanted to instill a love for learning in kids. I wanted to have a positive influence over students in the same way that so many of my teachers did with me.

Did you have a teacher who made an impact on you?

There were many teachers who made an impact on me as a child. One that stands out in my mind is Mr. McKinley who taught middle school English. He made learning fun!

How would you describe your teaching philosophy?

I believe that learning should be fun and that all students are capable of learning. Some students just need to learn it in a different way.

How do you think your students would describe you?

I think my students would describe me as demanding, kind and fun.

What do you hope your students take from your classroom?

I hope students will leave my classroom believing that they are really smart and that hard work pays off.

What is your proudest teaching accomplishment?

I have proud accomplishments every single day in the classroom. I take great pride in watching my students discover something new or understand something that was once difficult.

What hobbies, activities do you like to do when you’re away from school?

When I am away from school, I like to cook and read. I enjoy traveling with my husband and three kids. We love to watch sports together and do home improvement projects.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do?

I would take my family and travel to Europe. I have not been in many years and would like to experience it with my family.

Are you working on any special project in your classroom/your school?

My students are currently making plans to build a bakery using fractions. They have such wonderful ideas. I may need to sample their products!
