COLUMBUS — Ohio Governor has won his home state’s Republican Presidential Primary.

CNN declared Kasich the winner at 8:48 p.m. and other media outlets quickly followed suit.

“We’re going to go all the way to Cleveland and secure the Republican nomination,” Kasich said to cheers and chants of his name. “We’ve got one more trip around Ohio this coming fall and we will beat Hillary Clinton and I will become President of the United States.”

With 56 percent of the vote counted, Kasich led with 44.5 percent of the vote with Donald Trump in second with 37 percent. Texas Senator Ted Cruz was a distant third with 14 percent.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who suspended his campaign Tuesday after being beaten in his home state, was fourth with 2.6 percent of the vote.

Trump held slim leads in North Carolina, Missouri, and Illinois but none of the states had been called.

On the Democratic side, Former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton was declared the winner early as she rolled over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. As of 9:30 p.m. Clinton had rreceived 57 percent of the vote to just 42 percent for Sanders.

Clinton took square aim at Trump in her victory speech.

“The next commander in chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it,” Clinton said. “When we hear a candidate for president call for rounding up 12 million immigrants, banning all Muslims from the United States, when he embraces torture, that doesn’t make him strong, it makes him wrong…we should be breaking down barriers not building walls.”

The Associated Press declared Clinton the winner at 8:42 p.m.

Ohio was just one of the states won by Clinton. The former Secretary also won Florida and North Carolina by wide margins on Tuesday. She was also leading Sanders in early results in Illinois with Missouri too close to call. Clinton’s wins almost ensures she will be the Democratic Party’s nominee in November.
