VANDALIA — The following activities are taking place at the Vandalia Recreation Center through November:
VPRD provides swim instruction using the American Red Cross aquatic program* taught by qualified and dedicated instructors. The focus of the program is to teach water safety and swimming skills, using a progressive approach. New Learn to Swim sessions begin on Tuesday, November 10. Ages range 6 months adult. Lifeguard Pre-Screen Swim Evaluation
Before you may enroll in Lifeguard Training, you must pass this pre-screen swim evaluation.
• You must be able to do the following: Tread water for two minutes using legs only. Swim 300 yards continuously using rotary breathing and strong kick: 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke and 100 yards of your choice (front crawl or breaststroke).Retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool, swim 20 yards with both hands on the brick, place brick on the deck and climb out in 1 minute 40 seconds. You must be 14 or older. The cost is $5 Resident / VRC Member; $10 Non-Resident. Prescreen can be taken on either Monday, November 16 or Wednesday, November 18 at 5:30pm. This American Red Cross course will teach participants all the required skills to become a lifeguard.
You must pass the Lifeguard Pre-Screen Swim Evaluation that is offered on Monday, November 16 or Wednesday, November 18 at 5:30pm. This is for ages 15 and older and the cost is $200 Resident / VRC Member; $210 Non-Resident. Registration ends on November 24. Harvest Night Zumba
Come join the party on Wednesday, October 28 at 7:30pm! This special Zumba class will be free to anyone who brings in 3 or more canned goods that will be donated to the local food pantry. FREE Wall Night
Climbing one of the fourteen routes on the VRC’s Climbing Wall is an activity the entire family can enjoy! Don’t forget to wear closed toe shoes. Ages 6 and older. Tuesday, November 17 from 6:00-8:00pm.
Zoom Around the Room
Enjoy a morning of play with your child. A variety of play equipment will be set up in the gymnasium for children and their guardian to run, climb, jump and recreate. An adult must accompany each child or family of children. No instruction, just open play! Registration not required. Ages 1-5 years old. The cost is $4 per child per class. Drop-in for this activity and save $2 on Scissors, Snack, and Story registration. This is class is every Friday through December 4 from 9:00-10:00am. Scissors, Snack, and Story
This program is designed for you and your child to get to know one another and make new friends while having fun. Your child will experience gross motor movements, fine motor movements and social skills. Each class will feature a themed craft, story and activity. For ages 5 and younger (children must be accompanied by an adult).The cost is $6 Resident / VRC Member; $8 Non-Resident; each additional child is $4.Drop-in for Zoom Around the Room and save $2 on Scissors, Snack and Story registration. During this 6 session class your child will explore the developmental domains critical for early childhood education. Gross motor, fine motor, social, emotional and adaptive skills are just a few of the hands-on activities your Little Learner will discover. This program is for ages 3-5 years old. The cost is $30 Resident / VRC Member; $35 Non-Member. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm starting on November 10 through December 8. Kids Night Out
Parents, want a date night? Let your kids have a blast at Kids Night Out! They will enjoy all the activities the Vandalia Recreation Center has to offer plus additional games and crafts. Remember to bring a bathing suit and towel. For ages 6-12 years old. Sign up by 9:00pm the Wednesday prior to the event to receive the discounted fee of $10 Resident / VRC Member; $12 Non-Resident. Sign up after and the cost is $15 Resident / VRC Member; $17 Non-Resident. The theme of the program on Friday, November 6 is Superhero Night (Dress as your favorite superhero). Princess Tea Party
Hear ye, hear ye! All princesses should arrive in their royal costumes and be ready to make a keepsake tiara and participate in royal party games. They will also be served scrumptious finger sandwiches, punch, and cupcakes at the royal tea. For ages 2-5 the event will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 9:00-10:30am. CampREC – Thanksgiving Edition
Hey kids! Enjoy a day of Thanksgiving fun at the VRC on Wednesday, November 25 from 7:00am-5:00pm. Participants will climb the wall, swim, play in Luther’s Jungle, crafts and play games in gymnasium. Kids Home Alone
Are you ready to educate your child on the responsibilities of being home alone? This class taught by Kim Hannahan will assist children to feel more comfortable while at home by themselves. Topics covered will be First Aid, reasons to call 911, fire escape plans, microwave safety, and how to problem solve out-of-the-ordinary situations. A pizza lunch will be provided. Explore science, math, and engineering topics in this series of fun interactive classes taught by Aerospace Engineer, Joe Reiger. The classes are taught by an engineer with an aerospace degree. He has 20 years of experience designing special machines and robotic equipment that are used to make everything from automotive parts to kitchen blenders. For ages 8-12 years old. The cost is $20 Resident / VRC Member; $25 Non-Resident. The theme for Wednesday, November 4 from 6:00-7:30pm is Egg Drop: Learn about momentum/impulse. We will discuss how different materials carry loads and change momentum into a force. Then using different materials we will build our own safety capsules to protect an egg that we will drop test. The theme for Wednesday, November 18 is Gyroscope Learn what is so special about gyroscopes and how they are used every day. We will do some fun hands on experiments to see what gyroscopes can do. Attention homeschool parents and students! Come to this monthly VRC event to obtain your recreational needs.
