Senior Center to hold annual bazaar

VANDALIA — The Vandalia Senior Center will host its Annual Bazaar on Saturday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is available for purchase beginning at 11 a.m. The bazaar features crafts, quilts, a bake sale, floral designs, books, puzzles, trash & treasure, and over 30 raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle drawing, and door prizes.

Lunch can be taken to go or eaten in with the traditional menu items of cabbage rolls, BBQ, homemade bean soup, corn bread, chicken salad, and pies, cakes, and cookies.

Fire Division to hold open house

VANDALIA — In recognition of Fire Prevention Month, the Vandalia Division of Fire will hold and open house on Sunday, October 4 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Fire Station #1, 8705 Peters Pike. There will be free fire engine rides, a limited number of free bicycle helmets, and staff will help ensure that the helmet fits your child properly. There will also be lots of great safety information and fire safety demonstrations. Please make plans to join us for this free, fun event!

SICSA to visit Vandalia library

VANDALIA — To celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month, the Vandalia Branch of the Dayton Metro Library welcomes a furry visitor and the Humane Educator from SICSA (Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals) on Monday, October 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Everyone can learn how to help homeless pets at this fun, hands-on presentation at the Library, located at 500 S. Dixie Drive in Vandalia. Donations of items from SICSA’s wish list (www.SICSA.org/wishlist) are welcome.

Bazaar/bake sale to be held at United Christian Church

CLAYTON – The Disciples Women’s Ministries of United Christian Church, 8611 Hoke Road in Clayton, is having their annual Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many vendors will be set up inside the church with a wide variety of products, gift items, hand-made jewelry, knitted items of all kinds, wellness products, home and holiday decorations, etc. There will be a light lunch available for purchase after 11 a.m. All profits benefit local mission outreach programs. Scissors, Snack, and Story

VANDALIA — This program on Fridays from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Vandalia Recreation Center is designed for you and your child to get to know one another and make new friends while having fun. Your child will experience gross motor movements, fine motor movements and social skills. Each class will feature a themed craft, story and activity. Drop-in for Zoom Around the Room and save $2 on Scissors, Snack and Story registration. Ages: 5 & younger (Children must be accompanied by an adult). Fee: $6 Resident / VRC Member; $8 Non-Resident; each additional child is $4. Location: Vandalia Recreation Center special events room.

Kiser High School Almuni Meetings

HUBER HEIGHTS — Kiser High School alumni meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except November and December) at the American Legion Post 200 which is at 5046 Nebraska Avenue, Huber Heights. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. Graduates, attendees, and friends of Kiser High School ae welcome to attend. Please park at the rear of the building and use rear entrance.

News from the Air Force Museum

Home School Day

Home school students can explore the world’s largest aviation museum and learn about aviation history and STEM topics during Fall Home School Day on Oct. 5 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Throughout the day, home school children, ages 3-18, can participate in a number of free educational activities, many focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) themes. There is no advance registration; however, there is limited seating capacity for some programs.

Brunner Literacy Center Sponsors Third Annual 5K Run/Walk

DAYTON — The Brunner Literacy Center, a welcoming space for adults to reach educational dreams, is sponsoring its third annual 5K Run/Walk and optional 1.7K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015 at 10:00 am in Englewood Metropark (Main Street and National Road Entrance). The race proceeds benefit the Brunner Literacy Center which is solely funded by donations and grants.

Located at 4825 Salem Ave., and with the help of over 150 caring volunteers, the Brunner Literacy Center offers one-on-one tutoring at no cost to the clients. These adult students may be interested in improving reading and math skills, preparing for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED), practicing English Language skills or preparing for the test of citizenship. Northmont Class of 1975 to hold reunion

ENGLEWOOD — The Northmont Class of 1975 will hold a reunion on October 8, 2015 at Boston’s Bistro from 8 p.m. to midnight with a 70’s Alumni meet and greet. A class get together will be held October 9, 2015 from 8 p.m. to midnight at American Legion Post 707 in Englewood. Vandalia Lions Club meets twice monthly

VANDALIA — The Vandalia Lions Club holds dinner meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the Cassel Hills Golf Clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. The club does not hold dinner meetings in July or August. Programs include speakers covering topical subjects. Any Vandalia-Butler resident interested in attending, learning more about the Club’s Community Service activities, and perhaps joining the Club, may contact the Club President, Gary Schomburg at 898-2357.

Sister Cities meets each month

VANDALIA – Sister Cities of Vandalia meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Senior Citizen’s Center on Tionda Dr. at 7 p.m. followed by a Gemuetlichkeit (social) hour.

Mothers groups meet in Vandalia

VANDALIA — MOPS and MOMS Next meetings offer community and mothering support to mothers of children age birth through six. MOPS and MOMS Next meetings are held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vandalia (122 W. National Rd. in Vandalia next to Rite Aid) on the second and fourth Thursday evenings of each month from 6 – 8:15 p.m. Childcare is provided (please RSVP prior to attending to ensure enough childcare workers are available). TOPS meets in Tipp City

TIPP CITY — TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a weight loss Support Group. Our meetings are on Mondays at the Zion Lutheran Church at 11 N. 3rd St. Tipp City.
