Senior Center to hold annual bazaar
VANDALIA — The Vandalia Senior Center will host its Annual Bazaar on Saturday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is available for purchase beginning at 11 a.m. The bazaar features crafts, quilts, a bake sale, floral designs, books, puzzles, trash & treasure, and over 30 raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle drawing, and door prizes.
Lunch can be taken to go or eaten in with the traditional menu items of cabbage rolls, BBQ, homemade bean soup, corn bread, chicken salad, and pies, cakes, and cookies.

SICSA to visit Vandalia library
VANDALIA — To celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month, the Vandalia Branch of the Dayton Metro Library welcomes a furry visitor and the Humane Educator from SICSA (Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals) on Monday, October 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Everyone can learn how to help homeless pets at this fun, hands-on presentation at the Library, located at 500 S. Dixie Drive in Vandalia. Donations of items from SICSA’s wish list (www.SICSA.org/wishlist) are welcome.

Library to be closed Friday
VANDALIA — All branches of the Dayton Metro Library will be closed on Friday, September 18, for a staff training and development day. Regular operating hours resume on Saturday, September 19, 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at all locations (except Main Library, which opens in its temporary location, 120 S. Patterson Boulevard, on Monday, September 21).
Staff Development Day brings all Dayton Metro Library staff together at Sinclair Community College for a day of professional training and team building.
“With 22 locations throughout Montgomery County and more than 500 employees, many Library colleagues seldom meet, so Staff Day is a key opportunity to bring everyone together and keep up with trends in public library service,” said Cindy Simerlink, Staff Development Coordinator for the Library. “Our system-wide facilities upgrade gives us so many new opportunities for new programs and partnerships in the future,” she said.
This is 28th annual Staff Day for the Dayton Metro Library.
Scissors, Snack, and Story
VANDALIA — This program on Fridays from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Vandalia Recreation Center is designed for you and your child to get to know one another and make new friends while having fun. Your child will experience gross motor movements, fine motor movements and social skills. Each class will feature a themed craft, story and activity. Drop-in for Zoom Around the Room and save $2 on Scissors, Snack and Story registration. Ages: 5 & younger (Children must be accompanied by an adult). Family Day: Fall with Gravity
Celebrate the beginning of the fall season while learning about the force that causes falling – gravity – from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. A number of aerospace demonstration stations for all ages will be located throughout the museum, giving visitors the chance to experience the concept of gravity in a variety of situations. One station even allows participants to try on a real parachute and sit in an actual B-2 ejection seat!
Home School Day
Home school students can explore the world’s largest aviation museum and learn about aviation history and STEM topics during Fall Home School Day on Oct. 5 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Throughout the day, home school children, ages 3-18, can participate in a number of free educational activities, many focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) themes. There is no advance registration; however, there is limited seating capacity for some programs.
Brunner Literacy Center Sponsors Third Annual 5K Run/Walk
DAYTON — The Brunner Literacy Center, a welcoming space for adults to reach educational dreams, is sponsoring its third annual 5K Run/Walk and optional 1.7K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015 at 10:00 am in Englewood Metropark (Main Street and National Road Entrance). The race proceeds benefit the Brunner Literacy Center which is solely funded by donations and grants.
Located at 4825 Salem Ave., and with the help of over 150 caring volunteers, the Brunner Literacy Center offers one-on-one tutoring at no cost to the clients. These adult students may be interested in improving reading and math skills, preparing for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED), practicing English Language skills or preparing for the test of citizenship.
