VANDALIA – The Council of the City of Vandalia continuously accepts applications from persons interested in serving on City boards and commissions. Following is a description of the boards and commissions. Currently, there are openings on the following Boards and Commissions:
Board of Zoning appeals
BZA members hear and determine appeals where it is alleged that there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Administrative Officer; determine such variances from this Zoning Code as will not be contrary to the public interest; authorize the substitution or extension of nonconforming uses; and determine the similarity of uses.
Property Maintenance Board
The Property Maintenance Board of Appeals is composed of five residents appointed by Council to hear appeals related to the Housing/Property Maintenance Code. Meetings are called upon request by anyone aggrieved by a decision or order on the contention that the Code is being misinterpreted or misapplied. Members serve terms of three years without compensation.
Planning Commission members are appointed by a majority vote of council for three-year terms. The Planning Commission may act as the Platting Commission of the municipality. As such it shall provide for planning and regulations covering the platting of all lands which are subject to control by the municipality and shall cause an official map of such territories to be made. It shall adopt and recommend to the Council a comprehensive (and/or master) general plan for the physical development of the municipality which shall include the locations of public ways, property, bridges, utilities, buildings, parks, playgrounds, recreation areas, and historical places and features.
